Remco Evenepoel has had his calendar known for a while, but a confirmation has came from the World Champion himself that he will be at the start of the Volta a Catalunya later this spring as he prepares for the Giro d'Italia.
"I am happy to announce that I will be competing in the Volta a Catalunya for the first time this year," Evenepoel said in a video shared on social media. "I hope I will take advantage of it. I am looking forward to it, because it will be the last race of a week before the Giro. I can't wait to have an experience in this race. It will not be an easy test. I am very curious and I hope we can achieve some good results with the team."
The Soudal - QuickStep rider has started his season at the Vuelta a San Juan where he rode to seventh in the overall classification. He showed decent form, but his first big goal of the season will be the upcoming UAE Tour. Evenepoel will be racing the Giro d'Italia and will hence follow a schedule focused on the stage-races, and in March he should ride the Catalan race.
The Volta a Catalunya will take place from the 20th to the 26th of March and include three summit finishes. There Evenepoel is certain to face tough climbing competition with Primoz Roglic, João Almeida, Mikel Landa and Juan Ayuso among the riders expected to be at the start.
