The tension and excitement surrounding the Tour of Flanders is palpable, as fans and riders alike gear up for what promises to be a thrilling and unforgettable race. Ahead of the race, Greg Van Avermaet has given an indication of his strategy and approach.
"My podium for Sunday? I say Pogacar ahead of van der Poel and Van Aert. I don't think that this is my last Tour of Flanders or my last Paris-Roubaix. I'm doing my race and we'll make a decision after the Classics period,” he told La RTBF.
Although his experience and expertise are undeniable, his age may impact his ability to perform at the highest levels, particularly when competing against younger and more physically resilient riders. “I'm getting old. In 2017-2018, it may have been possible to win, but 5 years later, it's going to be really hard to win again. I'm not crazy. I think it's over to win, but still possible to have a good race there. I hope to do better this year there.”
He also addressed retirement concerns. “I still have passion. I love cycling. I still have ambition. I know it won't last 5 more years. I know it's almost over but I still want to enjoy life as a racer. and I hope I still have something in my legs to do a good result,” concluded Van Avermaet.
