Picnic PostNL's WorldTour future plunged into fresh uncertainty as team reveals sponsor setback behind missed UCI deadline

Picnic PostNL's uncertain WorldTour future has suffered another setback, with the Dutch team revealing that an unresolved technical sponsorship agreement is behind its failure to complete the initial registration requirements for the 2027 season.
Both its men's and women's teams were missing from the UCI's latest registration lists after failing to submit all the necessary documentation by the 15 October deadline. The omission comes at a particularly difficult moment for an organisation already facing questions over its finances, sporting future and internal culture.
Picnic PostNL has now explained the delay, telling Domestique that it is completing the application process but must still "provide information relating to the finalisation of a partnership with a technical partner for the coming season, following the bankruptcy of the current partner's company."
The team has raced on Lapierre bikes throughout 2026, but the French manufacturer's future has been thrown into uncertainty by financial difficulties affecting parent company Accell Group. A technical partner for 2027 has yet to be confirmed.

Another obstacle in Picnic PostNL's fight for WorldTour survival

The latest complication comes against an already difficult backdrop for Iwan Spekenbrink's organisation, which was granted only a one-year WorldTour licence for 2026 rather than the usual three-year approval covering the 2026-2028 cycle.
The UCI Licence Commission attached financial conditions to any extension into 2027 and 2028, leaving the Dutch team facing additional scrutiny even before its latest registration problems emerged.
A difficult 2026 campaign has added to those concerns, with the squad struggling for results and losing important riders and staff. Oscar Onley's lucrative departure to INEOS Grenadiers was among the most significant changes, while questions have persisted over the organisation's finances and ability to compete with better-funded WorldTour rivals.
Earlier this month, Picnic PostNL also found itself facing explosive allegations concerning its internal culture.
An investigation by NOS Sport and In De Waaier, based on interviews with 71 current and former riders and staff members, detailed accusations of a culture of fear and an excessively controlling management structure. The team disputed the overall picture presented but announced an independent investigation.
Wielerflits subsequently reported that the controversy could have consequences for Picnic PostNL's ongoing WorldTour licence procedure. The UCI assesses teams against ethical, financial, administrative and organisational criteria, although there is no evidence that the culture allegations caused the missed October registration deadline.
The Dutch squad had already rejected suggestions that it might voluntarily drop to ProTeam level for 2027, insisting that preparations to remain in the WorldTour were continuing.

Missed deadline carries potential consequences for riders

Picnic PostNL is not alone in missing the initial deadline. Jayco AlUla and its women's counterpart Liv AlUla Jayco were also absent from the UCI's published lists, with the Australian organisation citing delays connected to ownership changes and international bank guarantees.
Jayco faced a similar registration issue ahead of 2026 before eventually securing its WorldTour place. Picnic PostNL, however, enters the current process with the additional financial conditions attached to its licence extension.
Neither organisation has been refused registration for 2027. The UCI has confirmed that teams which failed to submit all the essential documentation by 15 October can still rectify their situation before the registration procedure concludes.
There is, however, a potentially significant consequence for riders already under contract. Under UCI regulations, and subject to other applicable provisions, riders belonging to teams that missed the deadline may terminate their contracts early. That right expires if their team subsequently secures registration, with no indication so far that any Picnic PostNL rider has exercised the option.
The governing body is reviewing applications alongside external auditor PwC, examining the financial, ethical and administrative requirements that professional teams must satisfy. The registration timetable includes a further documentation deadline on 1 November, before the final decisions are announced on 8 December.
Should Picnic PostNL fail to secure its WorldTour extension, registration at ProTeam level would remain a possibility, but its position in cycling's top division would no longer be assured.
The UCI's final registration announcement on 8 December will establish whether Picnic PostNL has satisfied the requirements for its 2027 WorldTour place, both for the men's team and the women's squad. Until then, the team's unresolved technical partnership adds another complication to an application already subject to additional financial conditions.
