Remco Evenepoel's spring plans were thrown out the window last week when the Soudal - Quick-Step was one of those to crash hard in a nasty incident at the Itzulia Basque Country.
Going down hard alongside the likes of Primoz Roglic and Jonas Vingegaard among others, Evenepoel was forced to leave the race in the back of an ambulance. Subsequent testing revealed a broken collarbone for the Belgian, ruining his plans for the upcoming weeks and casting doubt on whether or not he will even be able to make his Tour de France debut this summer after all.
Undergoing successful surgery over the weekend though, things are looking a little bit more optimistic for the 24-year-old. "Following his crash on Thursday’s stage 4 of Itzulia Basque Country, Remco Evenepoel underwent surgery on Saturday to the broken collarbone that he sustained in the incident," wrote Soudal - Quick-Step in an update to their leader's condition. "The surgery was carried out by Dr Steven Claes without complication, and the Belgian Champion – a winner of four races this season – has been discharged to recuperate. Everybody at Soudal Quick-Step wishes Remco the best for his recovery."
Celebrating his successful surgery, Evenepoel also was visited by partner Oumi, who brought with her a selection of sweet treats, as shown on her official Instagram story. "Surgery went well, thank you for the good care DR Claes and hospital staff," she captions the image. "Made a happy kiddo with koffiekoeken after the surgery."
