On the final climb, which had the summit 11 kilometers from the finish, the winner of the previous day in the Challenge Mallorca, the Belgian
Lennert van Eetvelt, escaped and caught Arrieta with 13 kilometers to go. Impressive Lotto-Dstny rider.
Behind, tremendous fight between the favorites (missing Alex Aranburu, out for a fall) with
Aleksandr Vlasov pulling the group in which there were also riders like Brandon McNulty, Marc Soler or Ilan van Wilder. Gregor Mühlberger entered the fight for Movistar Team.
Shortly before the summit, van Eetvelt went solo. He had 11 kilometers to the finish line. Arrieta was 10 seconds behind and the group of favorites 15 seconds behind. A very brave Arrieta caught the Belgian at the end of the descent and tried to get away. He risked so much that he ended up crashing in a curve. Bad luck, but chapeau for him.
Thus, van Eetvelt was the only one in the lead with a very small advantage over the chasing group. With 3 km to go the gap was around 10 seconds. He was chased 2 km from the finish line and Marc Soler tried an attack that cut the group. In the end the smartest was Pelayo Sanchez, who gave the victory to Movistar Team.
