The Giro d'Italia will count on Biniam Girmay's presence and that is already confirmed. Intermarché - Wanty are most likely having the Eritrean rider race both Giro and Tour de France this year, in Italy he will try to capture more stage wins after his 2022 breakthrough.
“Biniam Girmay brought us unforgettable memories during his first participation in the Giro d'Italia two years ago. But at the same time, there remains a feeling of unfinished business because he was not able to defend his chances until the end," Aike Visbeek confirmed in a press release issued by the team. "He is very motivated to return there with important objectives. The 2024 edition once again offers great opportunities for his type of riders, thanks to the numerous stages with a difficult finale that can lead to a group sprint. For these reasons, we decided with Biniam to include the Giro d'Italia in his program."
Girmay's Grand Tour debut two years ago followed his win at Gent - Wevelgem where the hype for Girmay was at it's top. He then had two sprints against Mathieu van der Poel in hilly stages in that edition, and won the second one, a very popular win. However whilst celebrating, he accidentally shot a champagne bottle cork against his eye and ultimately did not start the race the next day due to the injury. He returns looking to settle unfinished business with the race, and will be a candidate for the points classification.
"For his first Grand Tour of the season, we hope to see him continue his trend from the start of the season, during which he was competitive in Australia and in the spring classics," Visbeek envisions. "To be there at the Giro, he is following the same preparation as two years ago, with altitude training at his home in Asmara. And he can rely on two of his experienced lieutenants, Adrien Petit and Dion Smith, among others."
