Near disaster at the Giro d'Italia - Tudor rider crashes into UAE car but continues the race

UAE Team Emirates - XRG have had a disastrous stage 2 at the 2026 Giro d'Italia, having seen five of their riders crash, and three of them withdraw as a result. During stage 5, there was a collision between Tudor Pro Cycling Team's Mathys Rondel and the UAE car, resulting in a broken rear windshield.
The incident happened away from the TV broadcast, and it is unsure in which moment it took place. With 98 kilometers to go, TV footage showed the UAE car with a clearly broken rear windshield, sparking questions on what happened - and worries about the health of the likely rider who collided with it.
RAI and Eurosport have confirmed that this was Mathys Rondel of Tudor. However, the French rider is reportedly in the peloton and continued in the race despite the collision. The consequences are not yet known.
Rondel finished fifth at the recent Tour of the Alps and is an outsider for the overall classification alongside his teammate Michael Storer. Santiago Buitrago and Adam Yates are GC riders who have been forced to abandon the race over the starting weekend in Bulgaria.

santiagobenites13-05-2026 - I think Movistar is the best location for Jhonatan Narváez to move. With Iván Romeo, Carlos Canal, Pablo Castrillo, Orluis Aular and Iván Garcia Cortina, their punchy side is better than their climbing side. If they can get Héctor Álvarez off Lidl-Trek it would be the steal of the season. Tom Crabbe is a rider in a big tug of war and would be a great addition. - No problem with being extra careful. Should Pellizzari (against all the odds) win the Giro on bonus seconds and Vingegaard didn't go for them, Visma will be kicking themselves. With the Red Bull KM, there are plenty of bonus seconds. Combined with bonus seconds at the finish a maximum of 2 minutes could realistically be brought back through that. But Vingegaard is not as fast as Pellizzari, which is why Red Bull need to use the conservative Roglič tactic - wait for the sprint. - The boys on the Nero Show (YouTube channel) also discussed this topic in detail. It seems Milan changed his bike setup for this season to try to improve even more, but it has possibly affected his sprint negatively based on his results this year. The Nero Show compared the power data and apparently Milan was putting out a couple hundred watts more than Magnier but still lost that sprint. They thought perhaps Milan was wasting those watts because he was all over the place during his sprint, which may have been due to his bike setup (I think they said Milan's new setup was a smaller bike frame and wider handlebars?).Pogboom13-05-2026
