In a move that blends ambition with homegrown pride,
Movistar Team has announced the signing of Spanish climber
Juan Pedro López on a two-year deal, running through the 2027 season. The 28-year-old Andalusian joins the Spanish WorldTour squad after six seasons with
Lidl-Trek, bringing both experience and renewed motivation to a team focused on rebuilding with national talent.
Lopez, born in Lebrija in 1997, is one of Spain’s most promising stage racers and earned international recognition during the 2022 Giro d’Italia, where he wore the coveted Maglia Rosa for ten days. Known for his tenacity in the mountains and his animated racing style, López now returns to a Spanish setup at a pivotal point in his career.
“It’s an honour to sign for a team that embodies the values of Movistar Team, a home team after my six-year journey abroad,”
López said in the official announcement. “There comes a time when changes can bring something good, and moving to the home team is an ambition multiplied by two.”
The move signals more than a change of colours — it represents a homecoming and a fresh start. Movistar, Spain’s premier cycling outfit, has been undergoing a generational shift following the departures of longtime leaders like Alejandro Valverde and the transitional seasons that followed.
“Taking this step is a great opportunity for me,” López continued. “I want to bring the experience I have to the team, and I still have a few years left to give 100% and do my very best for the squad. Learning from my teammates, sharing my experience, and above all, trying to perform as best as I can. I believe this is the team that suits me, and I want to enjoy it to the fullest.”
Known affectionately in the peloton as "Juanpe," López brings not only results but a magnetic personality that has made him a fan favourite. Movistar Team’s announcement reflects a clear direction: reinforcing its identity with riders who understand both the language and the legacy of Spanish cycling. In Juanpe López, they’ve landed a rider who embodies both — and still has his best years ahead.
