The men's Ronde van Drenthe will be removed from the calendar in 2024. The organization announced this in a press release. The reason for canceling next year's edition is a combination of factors, mainly related to the financial aspect. The women's race will continue for the time being.
"Due to rising costs, increasing regulatory pressure and safety problems, the organization of the Ronde van Drenthe has decided to cancel the 2024 edition," the statement reads. The time pressure to arrange all aspects properly before 2024 has now become too high. For example, the organization had problems with permit applications and arranging hotels, which left all kinds of employees in uncertainty. That has now been put to an end.
"Inflation plays a major role," the organization points to the money problem as the first factor for the cancellation. "The financial contribution for UCI and KNWU has increased significantly. These are matters over which the organization simply has no influence," they refer to rising prices for fuel, accommodation and insurance as examples.
This means that another beautiful Dutch cycling race will disappear from the calendar, at least for the time being. It was previously announced that due to a lack of police capacity, competitions in the north Netherlands can no longer be organized for the time being. In recent years, for example, the Slag om Norg and the Noordwijk Classic have disappeared from the calendar.
