Matteo Jorgenson ahead of Amstel Gold Race 2026
Matteo Jorgenson’s Ardennes Classics campaign has been brought to an immediate end, with Team Visma | Lease a Bike confirming the American suffered a collarbone fracture in his crash at the Amstel Gold Race.
While the fall itself was one of the defining moments of Sunday’s race, the full extent of the damage has only now been clarified. Jorgenson will not start in either La Flèche Wallonne or Liège–Bastogne–Liège, ending his Ardennes campaign before it had the chance to develop.
“Matteo broke his collarbone in his crash during the Amstel Gold Race. As a result, he will not start in the Flèche Wallonne or Liège–Bastogne–Liège. We wish Matteo a good and speedy recovery!” Team Visma | Lease a Bike explained in a statement posted to social media.

From flawless build-up to sudden stop

The confirmation lands as a sharp contrast to the position Jorgenson had outlined in the immediate build-up to Amstel, where both form and preparation had aligned around this exact period. “My spring has gone flawlessly so far and I feel good,” said the American.
That confidence framed his arrival at the Dutch Classic, a race he had targeted as the starting point of his Ardennes block. “Right now I’m exactly where I want to be,” he added ahead of the race.
Instead, the crash has brought that trajectory to an abrupt halt. What was intended as the launch of a carefully planned campaign now becomes its end point, with the remaining opportunities in this phase of the season removed in a single moment.
The timing is particularly significant given the approach he had taken this year, shaping his early season specifically to peak for the Ardennes Classics. With that window now closed, the focus shifts immediately from performance to recovery.
For a rider who had arrived in Limburg with form, clarity and a defined role within the team, the turnaround is immediate, from a position of control to an enforced pause just as the races he had built towards were beginning.
