Magnus Cort Nielsen of EF Education-EasyPost has conquered the Alto da Fóia climb in stage 2 of Volta ao Algarve ahead of Ilan Van Wilder (Soudal-Quick-Step) and Rui Costa (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) who completed the podium.
The stage started with a 6 riders breakaway mainly of local Portuguese continental teams that were caught around 30 km to the finish. Soudal-Quick-Step set the pace in the Picota climb the climb previous to the Alto de Fóia. With INEOS-Grenadiers taking control of the pace in the final climb.
With INEOS-Grenadiers conquering the Fóia climb in a Team Sky fashion, all was setted for an uphill sprint finish with a group around 30 riders. Ilan Van Wilder launched a powerful sprint on the last meters that looked like it was enough for him to win, but Magnus Cort managed to beat him when he raises his hands to celebrate the victory.
With this win Magnus Cort Nielsen becomes the new leader of the general classification of Volta ao Algarve, the Dane succeeds, also Nordic rider Alexander Kristoff from Norway proving that the Scandinavians are dominating this Volta ao Algarve so far.
