The bad weather caused chaos in the final few kilometres of stage 2 of the 2023 Tour de France Femmes with multiple crashes. Emerging from the chaos victorious though was Liane Lippert, denying Lotte Kopecky in a thrilling finish.
After Lotte Kopecky soloed to the Maillot Jaune on the opening stage, the climbing began in earnest on stage 2 with a climbing start and a few climbs close to the finish as attacks can come.
Two riders formed an early breakaway, Georgia Williams (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB) and Georgia Williams (EF Education-TIBCO-SVB). The peloton however, kept them on a tight leash meaning their hopes of victory never really looked realistic.
With just over 50km to go, the duo had been swallowed up by the bunch. There was then a moment of worry for Annemiek van Vleuten and Elisa Longo Borghini as both were amongst a group of riders to hit the deck in a crash.
A counter-attack then formed the second breakaway of the day as Eva van Agt, Yara Kastelijn and Anouska Koster rode clear at the front of the race.
With 10km to go, the break maintained a 40-second lead. As the heavens opened, the roads suddenly became incredibly treacherous and there were numerous incidents of riders slipping.
Kastelijn locked the breaks, leaving just two up ahead before van Agt suffered a horrible crash on a descent with only Koster remaining up ahead.
Once the break had been caught on the final climb of the day, the big names came to the fore.
With none of them able to fully snap the elastic however, an elite group entered the final kilometre together. Lotte Kopecky in the Maillot Jaune was looking to double up but Liane Lippert had other ideas, powering around the SD Worx rider to take the victory for Movistar Team.
