Cian Uijtdebroeks suffers heavy crash at the Vuelta a España - Belgian has multiple injuries on arm and leg as team sweat over his future in race

Cian Uijtdebroeks endured another worrying moment in a Grand Tour. The Belgian from Movistar Team crashed during stage 2 of the Vuelta a España 2026 and, although he managed to ride on to the finish, he ultimately lost time to the winner, Matthew Brennan. The Belgian crossed the line 18 seconds behind the Visma rider.
The crash came on a complicated day and left Uijtdebroeks with several visible wounds. The rider, one of Movistar’s picks for the general classification, had to continue with multiple abrasions and discomfort.
Movistar Team has released Uijtdebroeks’ medical report after the stage. The Belgian has a wound and abrasions on his right hip and knee, as well as superficial injuries to his left elbow and arm.

The main concern, however, lies elsewhere: the left ankle. Uijtdebroeks suffered a trauma that prompted the medical services to carry out an X-ray assessment in the organization’s RX truck located at the finish line.
For now, no bone injury has been reported and the team will monitor his condition closely over the coming hours.

Movistar also wished to thank La Vuelta’s Medical Services for their care both during the race and at the finish.

The positive news is that, in principle, Uijtdebroeks will be able to start stage 3 of the Vuelta a España. The team will wait to see how he responds overnight and tomorrow before making a final decision.
The situation stirs some unease given the Belgian’s recent history. Uijtdebroeks had to abandon the last Tour de France after carrying health issues from the start. After six stages, Movistar decided the best course was for him to return home to recover and prepare his next goals.
Now, only a few weeks later, bad luck has struck again. This time it is not an illness, but the effects of a crash that, fortunately, does not appear for now to have caused a more serious injury.
Uijtdebroeks now faces the next hours hoping the soreness eases so he can stay in the race. The goal is for the Belgian to line up tomorrow and put this new setback behind him as soon as possible.
