Just 20 years old,
Juan Ayuso is seen as the big hope of Spanish cycling. Having only raced one previous Grand Tour, finishing 3rd at the 2022
Vuelta a Espana, Ayuso things this year's race will be even more of a challenge.
“The field is stronger and the course is even tougher," the
UAE Team Emirates rider says in the team's pre-Vuelta press conference. "Jumbo-Visma has one of the strongest teams here that I have ever seen since I became a fan of cycling. And then you also have
Remco Evenepoel."
Ayuso is daunted by the prospect of coming up against such stars however. “I am happy to be at the start here, because it has been a tough year mentally and physically. I feel almost 100% and I want to enjoy this race, especially because last year a dream came true here,” he says. “I would have liked to have ridden more races this season, but unfortunately that didn't work out. That can be an advantage here. Maybe not in the first week, but yes in the final week. The fact that I raced less than planned in the spring can now be an advantage for me.”
“So it will be a completely different game. We must therefore take a different course. The goal remains the same, and I hope to win a stage for the first time. That would be wonderful," he concludes. “The third week was easier last year, now it is very hard.”
