Jonas Vingegaard stays in yellow after stage 12 of the
Tour de France.
Jumbo-Visma played their cards quite explosively at the start of the final day in the Massif Central, ultimately keeping the jersey after being tested once again.
“Every day has been full on so far and today was certainly no exception. We will see in the final week what the consequences of this tough Tour will be. Everything indicates that this is an extremely tough Tour," Vingegaard said after another difficult day on the bike. It was all about the stage start where Adam Yates' attacks put Vingegaard under pressure, with him responding to a few accelerations, and attacking himself at times bridging across to groups.
The Dutch team's strategy seemed to have been that of chasing a stage win as well, with Wout van Aert, Wilco Kelderman and Tiesj Benoot trying to get in the breakaway - the latter succeeding, arriving at the finish in fourth place. Vingegaard rode alongside Pogacar once again the tough beginning of the stage, with the UAE Team Emirates trio putting pressure on his shoulders as all other GC contenders at times being distanced.
However at the end of the day the Dane remained safe and in the lead of the Tour, one where fatigue builds in ways in which it may not have happened in recent years. Tomorrow at the Grand Colombian he will have a grand test for his yellow jersey, facing off Tadej Pogacar in a climb where he has in the past won. "I'm ready for a big fight tomorrow and hoping for my best legs."
