Jonas Vingegaard reportedly makes his decision: No 2026 World Championships in Montreal for Danish star
Cycling
Jonas Vingegaard is reportedly set to skip the 2026 World Championships in Montreal, removing what had looked like the most likely route back into competition following his Tour de France crash.
Belgian newspaper Het Laatste Nieuws reports that sources expect the Team Visma | Lease a Bike leader to miss the championships in Canada, where the elite men’s road race takes place on September 27. “According to our sources, Vingegaard will skip the World Championships in Montreal after all,” HLN reports.
The news arrives with Vingegaard still recovering from the broken collarbone that ended his Tour on stage 15 and with Visma yet to announce another race for him in 2026. Only recently, the team offered its first update on the Dane for several weeks. “Jonas is still recovering from his broken collarbone,” Visma told Danish outlet Feltet.
No return to full training was confirmed and no comeback date was provided.

Montreal had remained Vingegaard’s clearest autumn target
Vingegaard had previously kept the World Championships in consideration, with his participation dependent on the condition of his collarbone and his motivation after completing the Giro d’Italia and most of the Tour.
Mads Pedersen was openly hoping to see him there. “I hope we get to make use of him at the Worlds,” the 2019 world champion said recently on his Lang Distance podcast.
Pedersen then addressed Vingegaard directly: “I hope his collarbone heals enough, and I am speaking from experience here, Jonas: your collarbone will be healed by the time we race the Worlds.”
There had also been considerably more pessimistic predictions. Michael Rasmussen recently suggested Vingegaard could remain away from racing until Paris-Nice in 2027 and warned against Denmark selecting him for Montreal unless he had recovered sufficiently to play a meaningful role.
“If he rides the way he did at the Tour, then yes, he can make a difference,” Rasmussen told Viaplay Sport News. “But if he rides the way he did at the European Championships last year, then it is completely irrelevant.”
He went further when discussing the effect an underprepared Vingegaard could have on the Danish team. “In that case, it would be a disadvantage having that anchor around, with huge amounts of energy being spent on him.”

Few major opportunities left in 2026
With Montreal now reportedly off the programme, there are few obvious major races remaining for Vingegaard before the season ends. Il Lombardia on October 10 is the clearest high-profile option among the late-season races, although Visma have given no indication that the Italian Monument forms part of his plans. Vingegaard has raced Lombardia only once before, finishing 16th in 2022.
His 2026 campaign had already included three major stage-race victories before the Tour crash. Vingegaard won Paris-Nice and the Volta a Catalunya before taking five stages and overall victory at the Giro d’Italia, completing his collection of all three Grand Tours.
He started the Tour only five weeks later and remained second overall behind Tadej Pogacar when his race ended on July 19.

Trine Vingegaard has since said she would understand if her husband decided not to race again this year after such a demanding programme. “But I also do not know which races would be the obvious ones for him,” she said. “And I have no idea how he will recover from that collarbone injury.”
Neither Vingegaard nor Team Visma | Lease a Bike have officially declared his season over. Montreal is now reportedly absent from his plans, however, while no alternative comeback race or training return has been announced.
