On Friday, February 7, 2025, Iván Romeo will remember it all his life. The 21-year-old Spaniard has achieved his first victory as a professional in the Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana. The Movistar rider has also achieved it in an epic way: with a solo attack 17 km from the finish line.
When the situation in the race left the entire group of favorites compact in the final kilometers, Romeo didn't hesitate. The young rider gave Movistar Team its third win of 2025 to confirm the great collective form of the Spanish outfit this year.
After the race, Ivan Romeo was visibly excited. The U23 world champion couldn't believe what he had just done. In immediate statements after the stage, the new Movistar star revealed that the attack was planned.
"I'm on cloud nine, very happy," begins Romeo in statements from the Movistar Team communication team. "This is what I've been looking for a long time, what we work for every day. After a very hard winter, I've made a very big jump in quality. But none of that is any good if you don't win. We have to materialize it, so I'm very happy for me and for the team".
"The attack was planned," reveals the 21-year-old cyclist, who took advantage of the presence of Pablo Castrillo and Jefferson Alveiro Cepeda in the front group to attack. "It's what we had thought. We knew that if we went over the pass with those in front, we would have a reasonable chance for me or Pablo. When in a group of 12 riders you have three riders, everything becomes much easier. The team is having a great season and the results are coming".
"I've always known what I can offer, and confident in my chances. But obviously not everything has to happen the first time," he adds about the fight he had with Pello Bilbao on Thursday's stage 2. "Everything has a process. I've followed it, in confident, and this is just the beginning," he concludes.
