"It's what he would want from a Grand Tour" - Giro d'Italia signalled as the ideal route for Jonas Vingegaard
Cycling
Jonas Vingegaard is the defending champion of the Giro d'Italia. According to Rúben Silva and Gavin Quinn, who discussed the Corsa Rosa's route on this week's CyclingUpToDate Podcast, the Dane should return to aim for a second pink jersey in a route that fits his abilities.
"I think Vingegaard should do exactly what he's done this year," Silva argued. "He looked good. It looked like everything was in place [...] I think Jonas Vingegaard has every reason to come to this Giro".
The course features a 37-kilometer long flat time trial that could potentially harm his chances of winning the race, if he were to be challenged by a rider like Remco Evenepoel or Paul Seixas; but that ultimately it is a race that delivers a lot more certainties than the time trial-heavy Tour de France.
Silva has argued that the Giro-Tour combination would be best for the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider, taking into consideration the chances of beating Tadej Pogacar at the Tour de France; and Vingegaard's real ability of winning at the Giro once again.
"He won comfortably even this year, and it feels like... I don't think the start list will be the same, but if it were similar, he can take the pink jersey with as much ease and the route just suits him".
"I don't think he's a good time trialist as he was in the past. Tour, putting all his chips in the Tour doesn't work because he risks losing so much time in the time trial".
Against Seixas and Evenepoel, the Dane appears in a natural disadvantage at the Grand Boucle, but that is not the case at the Giro.
The perfect Giro d'Italia route for Jonas Vingegaard?
"He can't win [the Tour], but as we've spoken before, he can win if Pogacar withdraws or crashes out. I don't think he can realistically aim for a victory," he argued, justifying Vingegaard's focus on the Corsa Rosa.
"Here at the Giro, yeah he can. He's got the steep climbs, he's got the altitude, the long efforts, the endurance aspect, the attrition fits him perfectly. So I think Vingegaard should come".
The Corsa Rosa has presented a route with seven summit finishes, and mythical ascents such as the Passo del Mortirolo, Passo di Gavia, Monte Zoncolan and several others where the race should be decided. s
Giro-Tour double a likely avenue for Vingegaard
"It plays into Vingegaard's favour at the same time, it's what he would want from a Grand Tour," Quinn argued. After succeeding in it this past May, the Dane has shown to be able to succeed outside of the Tour de France.
"Looking at this Giro he should say 'okay, I can do the same as I did last year and get to the Tour, and maybe this time the Tour will go better'. Or maybe you know, essentially finish the Tour and kind of finish where we started last year, or this year, this season".

Team Visma ultimately have a choice to make, which could also take into consideration the choice of his rivals.
"If Tadej Pogacar isn't here and Jonas Vingegaard is at the start line, you would probably have to say, in form, he's the favourite. Even with Paul Seixas and Remco Evenepoel here," Quinn concluded.
