The moment during the 2017 Giro d'Italia where Tom Dumoulin stopped on the road during the queen stage for an emergency bathroom break, whilst leading the race at the base of the Passo dello Stelvio, was one that will never be forgotten by cycling fans. Jonas Vingegaard reveals he recently endured the same, but it was luckily not caught on camera.
"I definitely think I had something going on. But now things are better and I hope to be in top form again. I suffered more from that stomach ache than I previously indicated," Vingegaard shared with TV2, telling that he had a Dumoulin moment (he had to stop on the bike for a bathroom emergency). "It wasn't the proudest moment of my career. It only happened once. It wasn't fun, but it can happen. Although I must say that the doping control afterwards was not pleasant, there was some extra pressure," he jokes.
During the first days of the Vuelta a Espana the Dane had stomach issues but kept details close to the team and not to the outside. During one of the early stages of the race, he reveals that he had to stop during a stage for the same reason his former teammate had. "During the Tour de France there would probably have been a few cameras filming it, but luckily that wasn't the case here. It just happened during the broadcast, but I don't think anyone noticed."

"It is the first time in a cycling race that I have had this kind of problem. Usually I go through a race without illness, but not this time. After what I went through, I'm glad I didn't abandon it. I'm glad that the fifth stage was an uneventful ride. If that hadn't been the case, I could have lost my ranking there already," he concluded. Vingegaard enters the final week of the Vuelta in third place, as Jumbo-Visma look to break several historic achievements.
