"It was maybe not the best tactics for Alpecin-Deceuninck to go so hard on the climb" - Tadej Pogacar sees sprinters denied on stage 5 of Giro d'Italia

Although not a day for the GC men, stage 5 of the 2024 Giro d'Italia was still one that needed to be safely navigated for Maglia Rosa, Tadej Pogacar, as evidenced by a number of crashes towards the end of the day. Thankfully, the Slovenian managed to avoid all the incidents and come through unscathed.

"Today was a very interesting day and the last one hour or so was really, really fast," the overall leader of the 2024 Giro d'Italia reflects in his post-stage interview. "It was incredible. The speed we kept in the last 50km was so high and coming into Lucca it was really intense and crazy."

Despite the intense pace however, the four-man breakaway managed to hold on with Benjamin Thomas securing the stage win. "The sprinters were chasing but unfortunately for them they didn't catch them," explains Pogacar. "It was full gas. When the breakaway went it was a really strong one and it was maybe not the best tactics for Alpecin-Deceuninck to go so hard on the climb."

"Tomorrow we need to be careful not to lose any time," Pogacar concludes, casting an eye to the upcoming stage, which could have potential general classification ramifications.
