Louis Meintjes took the victory on stage 4 of the
Itzulia Basque Country 2024, although the South African understandably had mixed emotions post-stage after the race was neutralised following a massive crash that saw the likes of
Jonas Vingegaard,
Remco Evenepoel and
Primoz Roglic among others caught up.
"It's not the way you want to win," admitted Meintjes in his post-stage interview. "I'm just happy that I felt good and if there was a chance for the break then yeah, I think I would have been ready to fight for the stage. But it's unfortunate yeah, it takes a bit of the pleasure out of it so maybe it's a victory, but it doesn't really feel like it because you want it to be fair for everyone."
Although the breakaway and Meintjes held a lead over the peloton, a disastrous crash in the bunch at just over 35km to go, saw the race neutralised as all the medical services were required to help the injured riders into the back of ambulances and take them to hospital.
"Right now, I don't really know what the situation was behind but it must have been pretty bad so I hope for everyone to have a speedy recovery," Meintjes concluded.
