UAE Team Emirates - XRG's Isaac del Toro has powered to the solo win at Circuito de Getxo 2025 this Sunday afternoon, continuing a breakthrough season that has seen the Mexican star at races such as the Giro d'Italia, the Tour of Austria and Milano-Torino.
The race got off to a frantic start with multiple attacks flying from the gun as riders scrambled to form a breakaway. After a brief solo move by Muhammad Nur Aiman Mohd Zariff (Terengganu Cycling Team), a group of ten riders finally established the decisive escape around 163 km from the finish. This group consisted of Gari Ugarte, Antonio Jesús Soto, Daniel Cavia, Joan Albert Riera, Rory Townsend, Sam Maisonobe, Pierre Latour, Samuele Zoccarato, Conn McDunphy, and Adam Lewis.
Their advantage grew quickly, surpassing two minutes in short order. UAE Team Emirates then took control of the peloton’s chase, visibly motivated after their narrow defeat at the Clásica de San Sebastián the previous day. They relentlessly pushed the pace to keep the break within sight, gradually reeling them back whenever the gap threatened to extend.
Despite UAE’s efforts, the break briefly extended to nearly three minutes when the team eased off around 125 km remaining. But as the race entered its crucial phase, UAE resumed their pursuit, with Domen Novak taking up the pace-setting duties, steadily cutting into the escapees’ lead.
The first climb of Alto Pike at 78 km to go proved decisive as the break fragmented under the pressure. The lead group was reduced to five riders—Soto, Cavia, Maisonobe, Latour, and Zoccarato—although Townsend and Lewis later bridged back to restore the group to seven.
By the time the race approached the 50 km mark, the peloton had closed to within just over a minute of the leaders. By 43km to go however, the strength in numbers of the lead group had increased again as a counter attack that included the likes of Orluis Aular and Quinn Simmons got across.
It wasn't long then, before Aular and Simmons had dropped the rest of the break and gone clear. However, with 17km to go, both had been swallowed up by the peloton, giving the bunch control at the front heading into the finale.
On the final ascent of the Alto Pike, Isaac del Toro then came to the front, launching a big attack out of the peloton. By the time the Mexican reached the top, he was 10 seconds clear of his nearest challenger. By 10km to go, Del Toro was 20 seconds clear of a chasing quartet that included his UAE Team Emirates - XRG teammate Juan Ayuso, Cofidis' Alex Aranburu, plus Lidl-Trek duo Toms Skujins and Hector Alvarez.
That chase turned out to be nothing more than a fight for second place though, as Del Toro held on for the win.
