Egan Bernal has looked stronger than he has for years at the 2025 Giro d'Italia. Sadly for the former Maglia Rosa winner however, his return to the Italian Grand Tour has been one plagued by bad luck, with another crash on stage 14 causing more time loss for the INEOS Grenadiers leader.
As the riders raced toward what looked to be a bunch sprint finish, the peloton was threading its way through slick, narrow cobbled streets when chaos erupted — a major crash brought down a large portion of the field, disrupting over half the bunch. Among those to hit the deck and get caught out behind was Bernal, with the Colombian eventually coming home over a minute down on the stage winner Kasper Asgreen in 23rd.
“There was a lot of tension to stay up front, and the crash happened right there. I hope no one was seriously hurt," Bernal reflected in a post-stage interview after having finally managed to get himself safely across the finishing line in Nova Gorica. "I honestly don’t know what happened — everything happened so fast. I tried to avoid it, but it was impossible. A lot of us went down. It doesn’t seem too bad for me, and I hope that’s true for the others as well.”
Whilst thankfully, Bernal doesn't seem too badly hurt, dreams of a second Maglia Rosa win now look slim for the INEOS leader as he ends the day 9th on the general classification 3:38 down on the Maglia Rosa, Isaac del Toro.
