Lorena Wiebes was the main favourite for today's stage of the
Tour de France Femmes and
Team SD Worx delivered her for the win, the second of the team in the race.
The stage was not without some controversy, as the Dutch team did not do much work throughout the day despite having the yellow jersey and main favourite. This saw Julie van de Velde almost win from a solo breakaway, but the work of rival teams saw a bunch sprint still come to be. “By the way, I had no idea that there was no control. I noticed that dsm-firmenich checked, which was ideal for us," Wiebes said in a post-race interview. "This is how they burned out their lead-out for Charlotte Kool."
SD Worx then had the numbers for the end. It wasn't a textbook leadout, but yellow jersey Lotte Kopecky was in the right spot and led out Wiebes until the final few hundred meters. "It's really not normal what kind of lead-out I had. They brought me perfectly. When we were told in the last five kilometers that she still had a lead of 35 seconds, all the girls were sent to the front to close it. "
"In the last five hundred meters I only had to get into Lotte's wheel. When I felt Marianne Vos coming on, I entered. I'm happy with this win and glad I had a good day," Wiebes concluded. It was a strong win for the European Champion led out by the race leader herself, now to wear the green jersey as her teammate will be wearing yellow tomorrow.
