Sprinters had their share of fun in Bordeaux, which meant only worries for the general classification contenders. It's calm days like these which often cause major shifts in the power, in particular due to crashes. But stage 7 has been calm even in that sense, allowing those who have gone all out on Tourmalet - like white jersey Isaac del Toro - to recover a little bit. Both physically and mentally.
The stage got underway with a two-man breakaway of Baptiste Veistroffer (Lotto-Intermarché) and Jakub Otruba (Caja Rural Seguros RGA) - a perfectly controllable situation for sprinter teams. As they were caught with under 20 kilometers to go, the race headed towards a bunch sprint won by Tim Merlier.
For UAE Team Emirates - XRG, who now have to protect both yellow jersey Tadej Pogacar and white jersey of Isaac del Toro, it was one of the few opportunities to sit back a little and save their domestiques for more important stages to come.
Del Toro currently in his third Grand Tour used this opportunity to take another lesson in the tactical aspect of racing: "In the end, it was a mass sprint - everyone in the peloton was more or less in agreement. So I just tried to stay safe, keep my body cool, and arrive safe and sound."

White jersey would be a bonus

The situation in overall standings is almost perfect for the Emirati team at the moment. Their best card Tadej Pogacar has already taken the race lead with a comfortable margin while back-up Isaac del Toro moved up to third overall after Tourmalet stage. In addition, Del Toro holds the best young rider's jersey. Will UAE invest resources in defending his position too?

"The white jersey can be a goal, but not at the moment. Foremost, I want to enjoy this experience in France. I'm having a lot of fun and I'm really involved with the team, and yes, I'm just happy to be here in this position. I'm living a dream and I don't look at my personal goals too much for now," he concluded.
