“He’s a star because of expectations, not because of what he has done” — expert view on Cian Uijtdebroeks and Movistar Team

Movistar Team’s presentation in Valencia has prompted renewed discussion around the squad’s future direction, particularly following the arrival of Cian Uijtdebroeks and the reshaping of Enric Mas’ Grand Tour calendar.

Eurosport commentator Javier Ares analysed the project on his YouTube channel, focusing on leadership structure, squad composition and the expectations now resting on Uijtdebroeks, who is set to lead the team at the Tour de France. His assessment centres on a clear idea: the Belgian arrives carrying the label of a star because of potential rather than what he has already delivered.

“There, probably, is the crux of the matter regarding the signing of the team’s great star, which is the Belgian, here, Cian Uijtdebroeks. We are going to label him a star because of the expectations he generates, and not so much because of what he has done so far. In times when it is very difficult to sign young talents, it is a signing that, at the very least, generates all of those expectations.”

Ares frames the move as a calculated bet in a market where securing young riders with long term upside has become increasingly difficult.

“He made it clear that Cian Uijtdebroeks is going to be the leader at the Tour de France. That other leader has arrived, and he has arrived with the intention, as well, of already making his mark at the Tour de France.”

That decision, in Ares’ view, opens alternative paths elsewhere within the squad.

“That also opens up the other option, perfectly valid, of Enric Mas finally being able to ride the Giro d’Italia. They are the only two riders in the squad who have contracts running until 2029.”

“He is 22 years old, he will turn 23 at the beginning of this year. He was already eighth, he finished top ten in the Vuelta a Espana at just 20 years of age. He was not fully convinced by the undisputed leadership of Vingegaard and other riders, and he reached an agreement with Movistar.”

Ares also situates the Belgian within a longer term vision for the team.

“Cian Uijtdebroeks is not only going to be the leader at the Tour de France, but is also very much the long term perspective.”

“Movistar once again becomes a refuge and a development pathway for Latin American riders. Nairo Quintana remains, he will turn 36 next season, and he is going to be a road captain. Jefferson Cepeda, a team rider. Einer Rubio, with his apprenticeship more than completed. Diego Pescador, 21 years old, a very emerging cyclist.”
