The first stage of the Giro d'Italia 2024 has already concluded with a spectacular finish, worthy of being the opening day of the first grand tour of the season. Jhonatan Narváez managed to take the victory in the final reduced sprint against Tadej Pogacar and Max Schachmann.
The INEOS Grenadiers rider already showed tremendous physical capacity on the climb to the final climb. Where Pogacar took advantage to launch his attack for the win, and where Narvaez managed to stay on the Slovenian's wheel until the meters where the final sprint took place. The Ecuadorian thus becomes the second rider from his country to wear the maglia rosa after Richard Carapaz in 2019.
In addition, Schachmann also beat the UAE Team Emirates star over the finish line, who in the virtual overall classification of the Giro d'Italia is therefore third. Behind the favorites, Geraint Thomas was the one who managed to stay closest to Pogacar. He did not take 10th place despite getting that position in the bunch sprint, because, due to the bonuses, Damiano Caruso climbed to fifth place. Most GC contenders arrived in the main group.
Romain Bardet finished (without bonus seconds) 57 seconds back on Tadej Pogacar, Thymen Arensman lost 2:17. Other riders such as Luke Plapp, Florian Lipowitz, Michael Woods and Tobias Foss have indeed lost time today which confirms the unlikelyhood of them aiming for the overall classification.
