The fourth day of the Vuelta a Espana was rather uneventful but that does not mean we do not see changes in the overall classification. In fact, the red jersey has changed hands, as David Gaudu finished ahead of Jonas Vingegaard and has taken over the race lead.
Stage 4 featured a slight uphill finale where it was possible to see splits, or even a few GC riders trying to obtain bonifications as had happened the day before in Ceres. This did not ultimately happen, but because Gaudu and Vingegaard started the stage tied on times, the lead could change depending on their finishing positions. Gaudu has done enough to jump into the yellow jersey.
Whilst Vingegaard may not have wanted to keep the race lead so as to save Visma's energy as much as possible, having the race lead would be a career-changing moment for Gaudu who sprinted to 25th on the day. He is now heading into the team time-trial in the red jersey, tied on time with Vingegaard.
Giulio Ciccone follows 8 seconds behind, whilst Egan Bernal maintains his fourth place 14 seconds away from the lead. Around 20 riders follow 16 seconds behind, not including Valentin Paret-Peintre who had to abandon during today's stage.
