Fernando Gaviria is one of the riders that is not getting a new contract with Movistar Team, after Spain's only World Tour team renewed with Orluis Aular whom they're betting on. However the Colombian, after a few unsuccessful seasons, is not hanging up the wheels just yet as he seems set to join Caja Rural - Seguros RGA.
Gaviria has been one of the most successful sprinters of the 2010's, but none of his major results have taken place in this decade. The Colombian is by no means old, at just 31 years of age, but his golden years are well behind. He is a five-time stage winner and also points classification winner at the Giro d'Italia; as well as a two-time stage-winner at the Tour de France - which happened on the 2018 edition. However after 2018 he left Soudal - Quick-Step towards UAE Team Emirates - XRG, where his performance in the bigger picture began to decline.
With over 50 pro wins to his name, Gaviria has left a name for himself in the modern peloton, but he has only won two World Tour races since the 2020 season and his last triumph was at the Tour Colombia, in February of 2024. He won on three occasions since joining Movistar in 2023, averaging one victory per season, far from ideal for the leader of a World Tour team. Elsewhere, the team has also struggled to perform, whilst the suspension of Oier Lazkano has brought the team further reputational obstacles.
In 2025 Gaviria was mostly absent from action, not making it into the selection of any Grand Tour and having as his best result a fourth place at the Baloise Belgium Tour's opening stage. In the context of many sprinters such as Elia Viviani, Alexander Kristoff, Arnaud Démare, Caleb Ewan, Giacomo Nizzolo and more retiring - men who dominated the sprints last decade - Gaviria could head down the same path. But according to AS, the rumoured move to Caja Rural - which has been ongoing for weeks - may be put to paper and officialized already this week, where Gaviria can boost the team's chances of getting a Vuelta a España wildcard against an ever-growing ProTeam competition.
