Ever since his crash on stage four of the 2023 Tour de France, Fabio Jakobsen has been struggling to just get around the course, let alone compete for victories. Now, it has fully taken it's tole and the Soudal - Quick-Step sprinter has been forced to abandon.
“Due to my stage four crash, and after discussions with the team, we decided it’s better for me to stop my Tour de France journey here," a disappointed Jakobsen tells his team's official website. "At this point it seems impossible for me to get to Paris, as I am not recovering, and my body is not healing from the crash.”
With the Tour de France set to enter the Alps in the coming days, the potential struggle to make the time limit over the climbs was not something that Jakobsen would have found a very attractive proposition. And after finishing 16th on the stage 11 bunch sprint finish that should have suited him perfectly, he has called it a day.
“I’m very sad to leave the Grande Boucle, because I had big goals for this race and wanted to be at my best with the team," concludes the 26-year-old. "I will now take some time to recover and clear my head, and hopefully be back at my best later this season.”
This news will do nothing to raise the spirits of Soudal - Quick-Step's outspoken boss Patrick Lefevere, who has seen his team fail to win a stage so far, and pull in the least prize money all teams at the first rest day.
