Circuito de Getxo 2024 | Movistar Team's Jon Barrenetxea secures first career win in thrilling finale

Movistar Team's Jon Barrenetxea has taken victory at the 79th edition of the Circuito de Getxo in the Basque Country. With this, the Spaniard secures himself a first ever professional victory.

Due to the blisteringly hot conditions in the Basque Country, the race shortened slightly, with one less lap of the circuit meaning around 25km less for the peloton. Once underway however, six riders got themselves up the road and formed the day's breakaway. Heading into the final 50km however, the peloton was all back together.

On the final ascent of the Alto Pike, there was a flurry of attacks again, with an elite group containing Juan Pedro Lopez, Quinn Simmons, Javier Romo, Clement Champoussin and Maxim van Gils going clear with a narrow gap from the peloton by the top of the climb.

There was a very nasty crash for Lopez on the descent however, as things began to come back together. As the attacks continued on the flat before the final sharp rise to the finish line though, the race was still completely open heading into the finale.

On the last kicker of the day, it was Movistar Team's Jon Barrenetxea who prevailed, with the Spaniard taking the first win of his career ahead of Champoussin in a thrilling finale.
