One of the most recognisable names in the women's World Tour peloton,
Demi Vollering had a bit of a mixed 2024. Although victories at the
La Vuelta Femenina among other notable races, the Dutchwoman missed out on
Tour de France Femmes success to Katarzyna Niewiadoma, before ending her season under a cloud of controversy following the
World Championships in Zurich.
The reason for the controversy? The very questionable and somewhat self-detrimental tactics applied by the all-star Dutch lineup in the women's elite road race at the 2024 World Championships in Zurich, something that Vollering, as nominated team leader, took much of the brunt for afterwards, as far as criticisms in the Dutch media goes.
Of note, Dutch analyst Thijs Zonneveld delivering a scathing critique of her performance on his podcast In het Wiel. "I can't explain this. I've never seen such a poor masterclass. Well, okay, Tokyo was maybe worse, but this comes close. I find it absolutely scandalous. What Vollering did, I find it scandalous," Zonneveld reflected in disbelief after the women's road race.
With her 2024 season now having reached its conclusion though, Vollering has taken the opportunity to escape from the World Championship furore via some well-deserved rest and relaxation on holiday in Turkey. "Calming down after a busy period," comments the 27-year-old via her
official Instagram account, posting regular updates over the past few days too, seemingly enjoying the break. "the weather is perfect, now it’s time for some nice strolls in the old city, finding nice beaches and searching for the best places to eat nice food and discovering turkeys delicacies!"
One thing that is still shrouded in mystery is where Vollering's future lies. The former Tour de France winner is widely expected to leave
Team SD Worx - Protime upon the end of her contract on December 31st. Despite intense rumours and speculation though, no formal announcements of Vollering's signing have been made by any team as of yet.
Great rider. Looking forward to seeing her on a team that actually supports her.
And Demi by no means bears sole responsibility for the WC fiasco and the issues with the Dutch women’s team predate her leadership.
she is a tough one to feel sorry for.
Apparently...
Demi was in the queue for the buffet in hotel. She told her buddies to stick close to stop anyone else getting ahead of them. But she ditched them all in a bid to take all the wholemeal chia seed muffins for herself. Then Lotte Kopecky slipped past them all and beat her to it.
Apparently.
