Although Caleb Ewan is under contract with Lotto Soudal - to be named Lotto-Dstny from 2023 onwards - questions have been posed on his continuation in the team due to the likelyhood of the Belgian team relegating to Pro Team level.
Despite it's recent addition of points, the gap to EF Education-EasyPost is still relatively large and Lotto Soudal are struggling to get the necessary points to achieve 18th place or better in the 3-year UCI Points ranking. The Australian sprinter has a contract until 2024, however it hasn't until this year been on the table a relegation.
It is said that Tim Wellens may be leaving the team after spending his whole professional career up to date in the Belgian team, and the difficult situation the team is in classifications wise put an extra difficulty to the negotiations. If Ewan were to leave the team, it would be quite the blow - despite the rise of young Belgian talent Arnaud de Lie who's been thriving in the sprints this season.
Ewan's agent told VeloNews that it is unlikely that Ewan will leave under any circumstances: "I don’t think so. He’s committed and more importantly contracted. I think he’d probably rather them on the World Tour but it’s been shown that you can be very successful if you’re not on it," he said, with the obvious example of Alpecin-Fenix who have a team focused on the sprints and classics and take several big wins throughout the year.
