For
Team Visma | Lease a Bike, the Spring Classics of 2025 proved a massive disappointment. With Wout van Aert going winless, Christophe Laporte missing the entire Spring through injury and a similar lack of form for former Paris-Roubaix winner
Dylan van Baarle, Visma were left outside the fight for victory at most of the big races. For Van Baarle at least, this underperformance seems to have consequences.
In his two and a bit seasons for Visma since leaving the INEOS Grenadiers, Van Baarle has struggled for consistency. Repeatedly spending time out of action due to injury, the Dutchman hasn't really been able to hit the heights - except for an Omloop Het Nieuwsblad win and Dutch National Championship triumph in 2023. As a result - according to the respected British cycling journalist
Daniel Benson at least - Van Baarle's contract is not set to be renewed when it comes to an end, at the conclusion of the 2025 season.
"There’s no official confirmation at this point, but we understand that Dylan van Baarle will leave Visma-Lease a Bike at the end of the current season," Benson writes in a post to his Substack. "At 32, Van Baarle is far from a spent force, but the last 18 months have seen the rider plagued by injuries and bad luck."
Whilst there's no news yet about where Van Baarle will end up in 2026 and beyond, the Dutch powerhouse will be keen to prove that he really isn't a spent force in the peloton.
I thought he did quite well in that team if not for the illnesses and strings of bad luck.
I think this kind of thing will become quite common in future in light of the way pros have had to up their game and risk-taking. Means more precarity but also a bigger pool.
