Arguably Great Britain's greatest ever sportsman and one of the most successful track cyclists of all time, the news of Sir Chris Hoy having been diagnosed with terminal cancer shocked the cycling world earlier this week. Since the announcement though, there has been a massive outpouring of love and support for the six-time Olympic gold medallist.
“I’m so grateful to everyone for their incredible kindness and support,” Hoy reacts to the reception his news has received via an emotional video on his official Instagram. "You have heard by now that I'm ready to share that my cancer is stage 4: I will be living with it for the rest of my life. Now it's not the news anyone imagines hearing, and it obviously came as a huge shock. We've taken time to process it as a family and I now have a deep resolve to turn this incredibly difficult diagnosis into something more positive that can help not just me, but anyone anywhere living with stage 4."
As he eludes to, whilst Hoy is still here, the Scot is determined to make a positive difference. One way in which he intends to do that is by writing a book, detailing his story, his struggles and his determination to fight until the very last. "I'm really proud of it [the book titled All That Matters] and I hope it can help anyone facing any sort of challenge in their life, not just cancer,” Hoy says. "It's also been a chance to spread the word about my charity event taking place next year called 'Tour de 4', I can't wait to tell you more about this in due course. The book is coming out in November. To pre-order All That Matters, or for further information see the link in the bio. Thanks everyone."
As mentioned, since the announcement of Hoy's diagnosis, support from all corners have poured out. In the comments of this latest update, things are no different. "You're my hero, Chris. So strong, inside and out, so inspirational, so human. You are one of a kind," says ex-pro and pundit Daniel Lloyd, while fellow British Olympic heroes Kelly Holmes and Rebecca Adlington send their support with love hearts.
