There's not much that hasn't gone to plan for Thibau Nys so far this winter. On Saturday afternoon at Superprestige Aardbeiencross Merksplas though, the Belgian was left frustrated as he came across the line in 4th.
“I’m angry with myself for going into the last lap so passively,” Nys fumed in his post-race interview having missed the podium completely behind Laurens Sweeck, Toon Aerts and Baloise - Trek Lions teammate Lars van der Haar. “I had the legs to make the race explode, but I was too lax in the final. That’s why I wasn’t positioned well. Sweeck did it perfectly, but I could have won.”
Thanks to Van der Haar nudging in front of Nys at the finale though, the Dutchman is the new overall leader of the Superprestige standings. “I wanted to launch the sprint at full speed, but I got caught on Toon's rear wheel (Aerts, ed.) in the last corner. So helping Lars was a small effort - I'm happy for him," Nys concludes. "Tomorrow I'll get another chance in Hamme, but it really hurts not to win the race with these legs.”
