Despite the fact that Yves Lampaert is a former two time Belgian national champion in the time trial discipline, for the World Championship time trial in Wollongong however the Quick Step Alpha Vinyl rider went in aiming for a top 10 finish.
Something he succeeded in doing, "I was aiming for a place in the top 10 and ninth in the world isn't bad after all. I hope that I will have recovered by Sunday and that we can put in a strong performance with the team.”
In an interview with Sporza, Lampaert revealed that he believed the wind may have played a deciding factor in the race, “You could already feel the wind coming in gusts along the coast in recent days. At certain times there is a lot of wind, at other times there is nothing."
The winner of the race and new holder of the rainbow jersey was the unfancied Norwegian, Tobias Foss. When asked for his thoughts it seemed even Lampaert himself was taken aback by the result, saying the following " I don't think anyone has considered Tobias Foss . He rode a very strong time trial. I think it's a surprise for Foss himself too. Chapeau for his performance and hopefully he can honor his jersey.”
As Lampaert himself mentioned, attention will now turn to Sunday and the road race where he will most likely be riding in support for his Belgian teammates, Remco Evenepoel and Wout van Aert.
Newly crowned Vuelta champion Evenepoel rode to an impressive 3rd place in the individual time trial and Lampaert was full of praise for his compatriot post-race "Remco can be proud of his third place, after his Vuelta." and "I think it's a very good performance. Third in a World Time Trial Championship is not easy. That title is yet to come.”
