Like the Australian races, the early spot in the calendar has not been favourable for the Vuelta a San Juan, who was not able to run it's 2021 and 2022 editions due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, looking ahead to a brighter future, the Argentinian race is set to be back on the screens in 2023.
As is the Tour Down Under, San Juan presents the riders with the first stage-racing of the season for high-level teams. Both races take place in the southern hemisphere in plain summer, which attracts a wide array of riders and teams who look to train on the good weather, aswell as the wide roads and more modest pelotons - in San Juan's case.
From the 22nd to the 29th of January 2023, the race has officially been confirmed to have been slotted in the UCI calendar. After it's 2020 edition the race has not yet been ran. The last winner of the race was Remco Evenepoel, who took his first win in a stage-race at Elite level.
