Stage 4 of the Deutschland Tour was a day for the sprinters but only a few reached the finish as the finale was heavily marked by crashes. In the midst of this, Team Visma | Lease a Bike won their second stage of the week with Matthew Brennan being led out by Wout van Aert, whilst Soren Waerenskjold became the race winner.
Brandon McNulty was the sole rider to attack and build a gap early in the day, an interesting move from the UAE Team Emirates - XRG rider but as he was not joined by anyone and was over 5 minutes behind in the overall classification, it wasn't possible to put anyone in the peloton under pressure.
There were a few moves inside the final 30 kilometers, and third place Riley Sheehan collecting bonus seconds in the intermediate sprint, but these would change nothing in the bigger picture. It wouldn't be until 5 kilometers to go that something meaningful happened as Alexander Kristoff, Phil Bauhaus and Maikel Zijlaard were amongst those involved in a mass crash that stretched out and split the peloton quite a lot.
Unfortunately inside the final kilometer there was another fall and more riders went down right before the final sprint. Wout van Aert led it out for Matthew Brennan and the Team Visma | Lease a Bike rider grabbed the team's second victory in a matter of only a few minutes after Jonas Vingegaard was victorious at the Vuelta a España. Soren Waerenskjold finished second and has conquered the overall classification, whilst Jonathan Milan rode to third.
