Jonas Vingegaard will be at the start line for the 2023 Tour de France on Saturday looking to defend his title and become a two-time winner of the Maillot Jaune. According to teammate Wilco Kelderman, the Dane is full of confidence.
“At the training camps he exudes a lot of self-confidence and that is also important for his teammates," says Kelderman, who himself has experience of being a GC team leader but this time around will be more of a super domestique for Vingegaard. "To show that he is ready. It is also nice that it is just someone who is in the group and does not put himself above it.”
This new, different role for Kelderman as a super domestique/plan-B is something that relieves some pressure but also brings different pressures alongside.
“When you have the pressure to ride a classification, you have to be constantly on the lookout, you have to be focused all the time, you have to do it for the team," explains the Dutchman. "And now it's more in support of Jonas, so that's going to be different. Of course the pressure is still high, because we want to win the Tour. But it is different.”
