"We were behind UAE and Visma and suddenly, there were bodies everywhere" - Oscar Onley narrowly pulls through stage 8 chaos

The 2026 Vuelta a Espana saw a hard restart of its general classification battle on stage 8. The race leader Tadej Pogacar - already 3:30 ahead of his rivals before the stage - was victim to a crash with 30 kilometers to go, and had to abandon. Suddenly, at least six men eye a possible Vuelta title. And among them is the current white jersey wearer Oscar Onley.
The 23-year-old Brit was not completely spared off today's chaos on the Valencian coast. But unlike Tadej Pogacar and many others, Onley escaped relatively unscathed.
"I went down in the crash with Pogacar," Onley revealed to reporters at the finish. "I was really lucky, actually. I hope Tadej (Pogacar) is okay, because we were going really fast and it was quite scary. I got off pretty lightly."

The stage was shaken upside down right after an intermediate sprint with 34 kilometers to go. All of a sudden, Pogacar crashed into Visma | Lease a Bike riders, causing a domino effect. Onley himself was placed right behind the two strong teams, but landed "into soft" and could swiftly resume his stage.
"I have no idea what happened. We were behind UAE and Visma and suddenly, there were bodies everywhere. You have to brake and try to stay upright. It was really chaotic today."
Something must've been in the air on Saturday. The eighth stage was marred by crashes since before it had even begun. Onley attributes the chaos partly to the comfortable feeling among riders on a day where not much was going to happen.

"When it's a quiet stage, I imagine everyone gets a bit sleepy. In the finale, everyone is fresh and ready and wants a real sprint finish. Obviously, all crashes are avoidable, but it didn't seem like anything to worry about today."

But maybe for the wins... With the stage wins, breakaways and all that, the other riders will have better opportunities now."

- Absolutely gutted to see Pogi go out like this. From the helicopter it was hard to understand what happened. Commentators were saying maybe he was hit from behind. - Massive respect to Mas, it was incredibly honourable of him to decline the red jersey. Refusing to after a rival's misfortune shows real integrity and class. That being said, Mas has ridden a flawless race from the start. If anyone deserves that jersey after Tadej, it is him. At the same time, you have to feel for Tadej.
