“We expected a lot from Antonio" - Tiberi sent Bahrain-Victorious warning as he's told rider 'can't afford' similar performances in 2027
Cycling
Antonio Tiberi is under pressure at Bahrain-Vicotrious following a hot-and-cold 2026 season, with a sports director for the team publicly stating that the Italian rider disappointed this season. However, a Giro olive branch has been extended ahead of next season.
According to Franco Pellizotti, consistency is the key for the 25-year-old. Following an impressive stage win and second place at the UAE Tour in February, Tiberi failed to bring in the same results throughout the rest of the season.
He rode Tirreno Adriatico, Itzulia Basque Country, Tour of Romandie and Tour de Suisse over the following months, taking just two top tens before an underwhelming Tour de France saw him finish just 37th - with few notable performances to take away from the race.
He did re-find some form in September with three top tens in Italian classics before a second overall at the CRO Race, but signs off on a disappointing season that promised more following his promising Jebel Mobrah mountain victory at the UAE Tour.
For Pellizotti, the rider could have been better suited to a Giro d'Italia participation rather than the Tour as he claimed the rider was 'always chasing' the race throughout the Grand Tour.
“We expected a lot from Antonio, but he went largely unnoticed in many of his races,” Pellizotti told Lega del Ciclismo Professionistico.

Tiberi 'largely unnoticed in many of his races'
"For an Italian rider, the Giro offers greater motivation. At the Tour de France, he should at least have fought for stage wins. He could have joined breakaways. Instead, he was always chasing."
Looking forward to the 2027 season, the Giro d'Italia is on the agenda for the rider. However, despite the team's plans to give him a Corsa Rosa shot, they wanted that 'missteps' can't be afforded as they warn other riders in the team could soon be given similar opportunities.
He added: “But from now on, he can't afford many more missteps. We also have other emerging young talents in the team."

The team's best overall performances in 2026 came in the form of Afonso Eulalio's Giro sixth place and spell in the Maglia Rosa, Lenny Martinez's Tour fifth place and Jakob Omrzel's Vuelta stage win and seventh place.
Speaking to Tuttobiciweb after the 2027 Giro d'Italia route was presented, Pellizotti declared: "For now, Tiberi is in our plans for the Giro. Antonio needs the warmth of the fans."
A return to the Giro will back fond memories for Tiberi. In the 2024 edition, he finished fifth place overall and claimed the white jersey for best young rider. Since then, he's taken podiums at World Tour stage races such as Tirreno Adriatico and Tour de Pologne before his UAE Tour performance this year.

- Ok, Walt 🤣... Vingegaard would be lucky to get on the poduim. He would not beat Seixas or Del Toro, let alone TP. Then there are the Americans...BD06-11-2026
- So, for starters. Cycling is a saturated, static/dying sport in traditional lands, it will not have resurgences like eg running occasionally does because of several obstacular (yes, I know that’s not a word but don’t make me point out the obvious at your expense) factors. Obviously, like almost everything involving money, there is a desire/need/advantage to growth and that can only come from (developing or just testing) new markets. For me, the WC is the obvious and best choice for several reasons, it comes at the end of the season so is less critical season risk wise, it is not a “pro” team race but nation based which makes integration of uncommon participation more natural. It is a vehicle for redistribution (one of a very limited number of available mechanisms to develop new markers fairly) that the fixed calendar doesn’t allow and it helps make budgets fairer over the long run (moving the whole circus to everywhere evens out everyone’s budget as opposed to having everyone always come to the same location.Jumpyjohn06-11-2026
- Sad that a more refreshing article like this, which could generate discussion in a number of directions, gets completely ignored for the importance of debating the level of superiority of one rider into every single last detail, including a majority of totally hypothetical ones. People complain there is no news in the off season and it’s boring but don’t realise how boring it is to review the same old discussion over and over again, several times a day. In fact, you’d almost think this was a rider fan website. Instead of complaining about the FREE (as long as you pay attention to data use if not unlimited coz this site consumes almost as much for loading Youtube) content, the presence of cv of authors (for the missed obvious reason that it makes it easier to insert extra advertising without changing formats), the lack of quality/checking and depth of articles, why not also think about the content, quality and variety of posts that everyone can contribute to? The platform becomes irrelevant when discussion is interesting.Jumpyjohn06-11-2026
