It's not too hyperbolic to say that
Mattias Skjelmose shocked the cycling world on Easter Sunday, stunning the world champion
Tadej Pogacar and the Olympic champion
Remco Evenepoel to take a thrilling victory at
Amstel Gold Race 2025.
After a dramatic last hour had seen the Dane and Evenepoel do something many thought to be impossible and bring back one of Pogacar's trademark long-range attacks, the trio entered the final kilometre locked together in a game of cat and mouse. As the sprint finally opened up however, it came down to a tight photo finish between Skjelmose and Pogacar, with the
Lidl-Trek leader ultimately taking the narrow win. In a new video posted by the Lidl-Trek team on social media, a disbelieving Skjelmose is filmed trying to come to terms with what he'd just done, immediately after crossing the finish line.
"I think I won?" Skjelmose keeps repeating, more as a question than a statement of fact. When the victory is finally confirmed and the realisation hits - there are scenes of pure, unfiltered joy for both the Dane and his Lidl-Trek team, with
Thibau Nys notable on the scene to quickly congratulate Skjelmose. See the heart-warming scenes for yourself in the video down below!
Everyone knew he was racing for third. But, after a long hard race like that, anything can happen in the sprint.
Huh? Coming third in that configuration would have been easy, DON’T race.
