After the crash-filled drama of stage 5, a much calmer stage 6 will have come as a big relief to the majority of the general classification favourites although Primoz Roglic and Geraint Thomas both had the stress of late mechanicals.

Alessandro De Marchi and Simon Clarke had spent almost the whole day ahead of the peloton in the breakaway and with 5km to go it looked as if one of the experienced duo would finally claim their first Giro d'Italia stage win. Heartbreakingly for them though they were caught with just 200m to go and Mads Pedersen was the man to take his first career Giro victory.
