Today the first 3 stages of the 2025
Vuelta a Espana were
announced, and the Spanish grand tour will begin in Piedmont, Italy. In just
the sixth time the Vuelta has begun outside of Spain, Turin will become the
second city outside of Utrecht to have hosted all three grands tours including
the Vuelta a Espana, the Giro d’Italia and the
Tour de France.
The only other city on that list is Utrecht, which hosted
the Tour de France grand depart in 2015 won by Rohan Dennis in a time trial. Utrecht,
the fourth largest city in the Netherlands, was also involved on stage 2 of the
2010 Giro, and was the start point of 2022 Vuelta a Espana, the year Remco Evenepoel
won the red jersey.
Ahead of next year’s Vuelta a Espana, Turin was also
involved in this year’s Tour de France on stage 3, won by Biniam Girmay. And
Turin has also been involved on many occasions at the Giro d’Italia, including
on stage 1 of this year, when Jhonatan Navaez outsprinted Tadej Pogacar to
claim the stage win.
