Top Spanish cyclists of 2023: A great Pello Bilbao does not hide a mediocre year

Spanish cycling is not going through its best moment and proof of this is that it has not finished among the best classified by the UCI to obtain four riders to participate in the next Olympic Games in Paris and will have to do it with only 3.
However, after several years without success in the Tour de France, the victories of Pello Bilbao, Ion Izagirre and Carlos Rodríguez have given it a boost, although the disappointment of Enric Mas in both the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España and the lack of victories in stage races are nothing to write home about.
No Spanish rider has finished in the top 10 of the UCI ranking this season, something that was assured with Alejandro Valverde for almost two decades. In the top 20, Pello and his teammate Mikel Landa have slipped into the top 20 and in the top 30 (almost) Juan Ayuso.
Carlos Rodríguez, despite his great Tour de France, finished 39th. Enric Mas is not even the best Movistar Spaniard of the year and finished sixth behind Alex Aranburu who has achieved good results, but still lacks the victory. Ion Izagirre, Jesús Herrada, Oier Lazkano and Iván García Cortina close the top 10 of the best Spaniards.
Special mention deserves Carlos Verona, sunk in the table as the 456th in the world behind men like Benjamin Prades, Carlos Canal, Joan Bou or Ivan Romeo.

- Yes, generally Jonas is a better climber than Tadej, but he's a little lighter. This year he was much lighter than he's been since I've watching him, which I think worked against him some. I have a feeling he will bring it next year but we may see something like we saw this year. We'll have to see, can't wait for the racing to start again.awp27-12-2024

What if he’d not have had the need or pressure to focus on GC but could just pick and choose stages like Cav. - I hope Van Aert can come back once more. He is one of the transcendent talents of this era, but he has had such terrible accidents. It's hard to imagine the will and dedication it takes to rehabilitate and remount.

- IMHO, Jonas climbing is a little better than Tadej but I agree with him: unless you are a frustrated hater, it is impossible not to be fascinated by Tadej's versatility. I have never watched Merckx (or Hinault) then I am grateful to live in this period and can watch the awesome Tadej.

- i don’t know nearly as much about bruyneel or hincapie as most of us do about lance, but we judge people by the company they keep. i hand no idea what psychological problems the other two have, but there’s gotta be something pretty severely wrong with them if they continue to choose to be close to armstrong.OCexile26-12-2024
