Although we are only 8 stages gone at the 2023 Tour de France, the battle for the Maillot Jaune has already been incredibly fierce and a simply must-watch affair. Jonas Vingegaard is expecting more fireworks on stage 9 on Sunday.
Although stage 8 saw plenty of drama including the abandon of Mark Cavendish and the victory of Mads Pedersen, Vingegaard and the majority of his fellow GC riders enjoyed a relatively quiet day. “We expected a difficult finale. The stage was demanding because of the heat but we’ve dealt with it," he says. "We would have preferred to win the stage but Mads has been very strong."
Stage 9 will see the riders take on the infamous Puy-de-Dôme. One of the Tour de France's most historic crimes, the stage 9 summit finish is likely to be a day where the general classification is shaken up once more.
"I went to recon the Puy-de-Dôme the day before the Dauphiné, it’s extremely steep," Vingegaard analyses. "Tomorrow’s stage can be decisive but there will more afterwards.”
