Tom Dumoulin's Giro d'Italia ambitions are according to Jumbo-Visma quite cautious, however the Dutch stage-racer has put on a strong performance at today's effort in Budapest to place himself high up in the standings - although having been disappointed with the third place on the road.
"It was a good time trial, but it was not one I had hoped for. On a course like this, you have to develop as much speed as possible and hope you have enough left for the climb. Unfortunately that didn’t work out because on the climb I felt I was blowing myself up," Dumoulin said in a post-race interview. Despite a strong performance, he saw Simon Yates and Mathieu van der Poel get the best of him.
"I came here for the win, so it’s disappointing that I didn’t manage. On the other hand, I felt good and strong. That’s something I can build on," he concluded. Dumoulin has brushed off the certainty that he will be fighting for the overall classification, however that is a possibility and an amibition for the Dutchman.
If nothing out of the ordinary occurs tomorrow, Dumoulin will be heading into the first mountain stage of the race in third place in the overall classification and in a promising spot - also the first of the Dutch team.
