Stage 1 of the 2025 Volta ao Algarve turned out to be one for the history books, despite the results of the day being annulled. One of the worst affected by the chaos and confusion at the end of Wednesday's racing was INEOS Grenadiers' Filippo Ganna, who was denied a stage win by the race organisers decision to cancel the stage results.
In case you somehow missed it, heading into the final straight for the bunch sprint, a large majority of the peloton took a wrong turning, going off route and being left helplessly on the wrong side of the barriers as INEOS Grenadiers' Ganna sprinted to the victory almost all on his own. Stage 2 saw no such drama, as a summit finish decided the day, with UAE Team Emirates - XRG duo Jan Christen and Joao Almeida coming home in a one-two result. A little further back though, Ganna eventually came across the line in 113th, alongside Biniam Girmay, nearly 17 minutes down.
Afterwards, the Intermarché - Wanty social media team took the opportunity to poke fun at the farcical scenes of the day prior, posting a picture of Ganna and Girmay rolling across the line with the caption: "Today, we followed Ganna and we finished safely!" See for yourself down below!
