Stage 1 was not a good start to Giro d'Italia for INEOS Grenadiers' co-leader Thymen Arensman who lost more than two minutes in a stage around Turin. His father wasn't thrilled by this and reached out to X to blame the team for messing up his son's preparation. However he later acknowledged his overreaction at the time and removed his post the next day.
Martijn Arensman received quite some reactions to this opinion – his tweets are personal in nature – and decided to delete them shortly afterward. "Yeah yeah, I'll delete and bite the dust," he later stated on his social media account.
Update: Martijn Arensman completely deleted his Twitter account.
Before the Giro, he also used X to question his son's role in this Giro, when it wasn't yet clear if Arensman was seen as a co-leader by INEOS Grenadiers. When IDLProCycling asked the Dutch cyclist about this, he couldn't help but smile at the time. "Don't listen to my father too much, haha!"
Today, Thymen woke up with better legs and while 24th place in Santuario di Oropa is far from where he imagined to be, it's already an improvement compared to Saturday. The team remains extremely confident in Arensman's fantastic third week performances to throw some chaos into final GC.
